Brief History of the Toy Figure. It all started with a young lady called Barbie! Barbie was introduced to the world at the American Toy Fair in New York City in 1959. A few years later along came G.I. JOE by Hasbro 1964. (Ken, Barbie's boyfriend was introduced in 1961, pipping G.I. Joe at the post as a possible suitor for Barbie!) Later, a special license was given by a Japanese toy company named Takara. They created a G.I. JOE cyborg figure that was based on the original G.I. Joe concept by Hasbro but with robotic parts. Now in the 70s a company called Mego were creating Star Wars figures after having some success with superheroes from comic books such as Marvel etc. And with the huge success of Star Wars, these toy figures boomed! After the fame of the Star Wars figures later came the figure lines of Thundercats, Masters of the Universe, Super Powers Collection and Transformers, just to name a few. Collectors were emerging around the late 80’s. They would buy toy figures in their original packaging and display their proud purchases. Today's market is expanding fast with companies like Palisades, NECA and McFarlane Toys. Especially appealing with adult collectors, these toy figures are becoming finely detailed and some are even intended to be displayed as statues. Excellent opportunity.
